Champneys - Student Led Crit.

Today I took part in the student led crit that I had previously signed up for. It was a different group than I have previously been with as it was something that we hadn't organised ourselves. However this was beneficial as it was individuals I don't normally get feedback from and it was good to look at peoples work I don't normally see.

To start I briefly talked through the work I have done so far and the design direction I have been taking this year. And then moved on to speak about what I'm doing currently and in particular the Champney's brief. I spoke about our main idea behind the sub brand and how this has influenced our design decisions. One aspect I did want feedback on was how we could promote our brand further to the target audience and get them more familiar with it.

Feedback:
  • The aesthetics work really well with the audience we our aiming for and give a luxury feel.
  • One way to promote the brand further would be to create even small samples that could be handed out on the street or within magazines.

Champneys - Filling the Bottles.

We have recently gone to the supermarket to get the contents for our bottles. We have decided to stick with white to clear contents, as we felt our pattern is so busy and bright to introduce more colour could make the overall appearance quite garish, whereas the white gives a slick and high quality appearance.

We also experimented with laying the filled bottles on different back drops to determine what we should do for the inside of our gift box. We initially looked at using our bold pattern but felt that it was too much and next was a lilac tone that made our contents appear to have a yellowy tinge. Finally we felt that the best result was white as it complimented the bottles the most successfully.

Champneys - Vacuum Forming.

For our sample box packaging we want to create a plastic mould that our glass bottles could slot into. We took this idea to the workshop and were told to create a simple plan that illustrated the dimensions of everything. We were really happy with the wooden mould that was created and the structure was exactly as we had imagined.

The next step was to go to Vernon St to get the plastic vacuum formed as they had the clear material that we wanted. It was really interesting to see the process and the fast speeds that it could do it. Once this process was finished we had some slight difficulty removing the wood block as it was a very tight fit.

Once this stage was completed we then trimmed off the excess plastic and also cut off some of the height as it was quite tall and also some of the bottom corners of plastic had begun to crack from trying to remove it from the wood. We are really happy with the end results and proud that we tried this new process that was initially quite daunting.

Champneys - Product Guidebook Designs.

As a supplement to the sample product pack we have created this informative set that will give the consumer all the information they will need. We feel that this will be beneficial as this younger audience may feel quite daunted and intimated on what to use and may have limited knowledge on what will be personally beneficial for them. These cards give a description on what the product itself does and also what the ingredients themselves are good for. We decided to use this strip of pattern design as it helps to frame the information and also links with what we plan to do with the website.

Champneys - Label Development.

Once we started to apply our label designs to the bottles we found that the composition wasn't suitable for the small scale and that it needed to be condensed. To tidy it up we removed the italic style as we felt it was unnecessary and made the label harder to read. We also centred type as it was more effective in a square layout.

Champneys - Sub Brand Research.

As suggested in the previous crit I have decided to research further into other sub brands that are around. I found it hard to find this happening within the sector we're looking at so I came across brands from other areas. It has been interesting to see how this has been approached and what links have been created to still keep the association with the main aspect. After looking at these examples it became clear to me that sub brands don't have to be an almost exact reflection of the original and can even be almost totally different and still be successful.

"A true sub brand is a name which a company attaches to part of its product range or services and which it believes deserves special promotional support. Sometimes such sub brands are used in isolation from the main brand but it is far more common to link both names - as in Ace Courier Gold. The sub brand is in this way endorsed by the main brand and hopefully some key values are transferred. However, as we shall discuss shortly, whilst the sub brand may be strengthened in this way, the main brand may be weakened; if nothing else, the identity is likely to be less distinct."

Asda

Asda is a good example as it covers a variety of price ranges and age demographics. The branding for each sub section varies quite greatly, and the only link between them is that the Asda logo is incorporated, I had expected maybe a similarity in colour usage or type but this hasn't been the case. When looking at the examples in a group like this it is even easier to see the techniques that have been used to attract certain individuals. For example the products for children use more fun typography and also use some character illustrations. In addition the contrast between extra special and smart price is obvious from the script type face and luxurious purple to basic photographic imagery and simple layouts.

Channel 4

Channel 4 was interesting to look at as the logo branding was very individual for each sub channel and really gave an impression of its personality. The visual style of each logo is totally different but they link together by the fact that they all form the number 4 in one way or another. As well as the logo I also looked at the channel indents to see how the branding was applied to additional items and although each style was very individual they were all moving image that had a strong corresponding link with their logo. Finally I investigated how each separate website was branded as this is something we need to consider for our own project. I found that apart from the main channel all of the others had a very similar layout that had the specific style applied to it.

Virgin

Another company I looked at was Virgin and I found that this was the most cohesive out of the selection as there was variety but the main logo was present in all. Another aspect that is repeated in the bold red colour as this is a strong part of the brand identity. The style of the adverts is quite different but as said before the continual use of the main logo links them together and makes it recognisable.
